Islamic History and Maritime Ethnography PhD Studentships at United Kingdom

The project, based in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, is currently offering two PhD studentships covering annual tuition fees (UK/EU or International rate) and providing a £7,500 annual stipend.

The deadline for applications is 15 July. Interviews will take place on 4 August.

Exceptional researchers are needed for an exciting collaborative three-year project. Directed by Prof Dionisius Agius, the five-strong team will work on the MARES project (Maritime Ethnography of the Arabian/Persian Gulf and the Red Sea: people, trade and pilgrimage from the emergence of Islam to the coming of the Portuguese in the Western Indian Ocean).

You will need a Masters degree in a relevant subject and ideally have a background in archaeology. The two studentships are full-time over three years, starting 1 October 2008. All applicants will need a good command of Classical Arabic and spoken Arabic (if researching the Red Sea) plus Classical and Modern Persian (if focusing on Arabian/Persian Gulf).

  1. I am Shukri M. M. Hijazi a Palestinian student holder of a B.A. in Humanitarian Sciences in history with total grand of Very good from Al Aqsa University of Gaza in 1999.
    Also, I have got a master degree in the Islamic History from Al Neelin University In the Republic of Sudan in 2006 .

    At the time being I work as a teacher of social studies at UNRWA schools thus I do serve my people the Palestinian refugees .
