The University of Milan announces a competition by selection on the basis of academic qualifications for the admission of non EU citizens to the following Research Doctorate/Ph. D. degree courses:

1. Mathematical Sciences from Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics: 1 position.
2. Ancient, literary, philological and art historical studies, Graduate School of Humanae Litterae: 1 position.

Studentships general rules
2 (two) studentships will be awarded to selected applicants. Further places within the above Graduate Schools will then be made available for selected applicants holding studentships awarded by other Bodies.

Requirements
Applications for selection are invited from non EU citizens who do not reside in Italy and hold a foreign degree. The candidates` degrees will be recognised as equivalent to the Italian `Laurea magistrale` (exclusively for the purposes of this competition) by the competent Academic Board.
The University can at any time exclude candidates lacking the admission requirements.

The Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland is inviting applications for a PhD in Information Systems with an emphasis on database integration. The project is supported by a grant from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Project Description:
Database integration is a process with multiple steps, leading from the identification of the databases to the testing of the integrated system. The central step of this process is the identification of database elements that are similar to each other. This step is called schema matching. Human users perceive schema-matching methods as successful when they match database elements according to the same similarity criteria that the users would apply. Many automatic software-supported schema-matching methods have been proposed, using a range of different notions of similarity. However, existing research has paid little attention to empirical work: There is little knowledge of how human data integrators judge the similarity of database elements. A recent study has shown that a "one-size-fits- all" approach does not apply and that human notions of similarity are strongly affected by the database integration context. The proposed research is a study to systematically examine how human database integrators carry out schema matching. This knowledge will then be applied to implement improved schema matching methods.

We are currently offering a "PhD fellowship/ postdoc position (Salary scale according to 13 TV-L)"

in Mathematics at the Chair of Applied Analysis of the University of Osnabrück, Germany, starting from 1st November 2008.

The employment will be based on the pool of applicants and their respective qualifications, either as a PhD fellowship (75 %) or as a postdoc-position (100%) for a period of three years.

A master degree in mathematics with outstanding grades is expected. There is the possibility for a doctorate or postdoc lecture qualification respectively.
